Finally a result at the world largest democracy!!

Here it goes the end of the marathon Indian elections, a new government ready to be sworn in and the dawn of some new faces ready to sell India right upto her bones , congratulations to you on selecting the new set of suckers. And congratulations to Indian Congress, some filthy rich politicians are just going to get filthier. Now that’s nothing new we all are already ready for it and half of us don’t give a damn as to who is at the helm of affairs at the world largest democracy. But like all humans there is always a silver lining of hope an I am one amongst the million who call India their home.

Well I still have not made up my mind which political outfit will screw up India less but I am certainly happy about the fact that a single political part will run a government for the next 5 years and political stability will prevail. And the best part, they will not have to go through a litmus test ‘vote of confidence’ in the parliament just in case though totally out of intention they plan to do something good for the country.

Well all said and done, the only reason election tilted Congress way is the hope to have a single party ruling the nation making there decision making more easier and also the gleam of hope from the new breed of young politicians beings groomed likes of Rahul Gandhi, Scindia, Pilot to name a few . Which has been clearly missing with the second biggest party i.e BJP. True that a government or running a government is all about team work but when it comes to getting a vote it is always in the name of a leader ex Atal Bihari Vajpayee, Barack Obama, (how many American are aware that his core team has a high concentration of Indians like of Sonal Shah and others and I am sure they will not be pleased to hear about it). A surprising fact I will like to share Indian population is one of the youngest in the world but has the one of the oldest parliament in terms of average age.

Let hope this so called wave of change claimed by the Congress is a new beginning of an efficient government working towards the betterment of India Amen!!

'Practise makes a man perfect, but doing the same thing 1000 times bugs me!!!

Right from my childhood I have been taught the importance of hard work a famous verse in Sanskrit summons it best "करत करत अभ्यास के, जड़मति होत सुजान रसरी आवत जात ते, सिल पर परत निसान" the approx meaning is " Persistence can change a thick brained fool to an intelligent person, even a soft rope leaves a mark on a stone when rubbed continuously". Surely one of the most widely used statements to signify the virtue of persistence. To start with I am not questioning the wisdom of the person who wrote it but will certainly like to put across the point of the unrealistic comparison between a living organism to a non-living object.

True the rope left its mark on the rock but was that the purpose of it??? would someone use it if to sculpture the rock??? the answer is NO!!! moreover the dynamics with respect to a human beings in terms of work are way different. Making a human do things again and again in order to perfect an art without giving due consideration to his human values makes him get treated more like inhuman/machines, which at the end of the day are channels for revenue generation. What about there emotions, aspirations and every thing that makes him human.

Or can't the people get a more simpler inference "the person is at the wrong job!!" if he has to do a thing a zillionth times to get things right, it is simply the incorrect allocation of work.... can a driver be a good cook, can a physics scholar teach chemistry (off course they can learn it over a period of time but whats the point, it is better to let them do the work they like or what they are best at) cause at he end of the day we all are trying to get things done in an efficient way. Working within your limitation, stressing on your strength is intelligence rather than trying something which could be out of reach. Don't get me wrong I do not mean one should not go for goals that makes you stretch your limitation after all that how one grows but at the end of the day one should stretch on the flexible side rather than stretching the rigid qualities of one's persona.

Lets not make people do what they don't like, making them feel wasted, unwanted which leaves them tired, bored and frustrated. Instead make them do what they like, cause at he end of the day a man never excelled without loving what he does!!!

The Nano's Macro effect !!!!

The man behind the Nano, Ratan Tata, I still remember his speech during the unveiling of Nano, ending on the note "A promise is a promise". A huge applaud who made this car a reality, beating all the odds what so ever.

A car priced at 1,00,000 INR , was scuffed by many, Tata motors was silent, there action instead did all the talking. The booking are on and I am sure the delivery will be on time as well. There is a saying 'Luck favors the brave', at the time of unveiling, steel prices were at an all time high and crude oil was scaling new heights, and the whole 1 lakh car thing seemed to be a totally inviable entity. With the recession in, it has been a blessing in disguise for the Tata.

They have made themselves noticed at the right time, suddenly you see leading automajors talking about low cost car, hybrid cars and what not. You feel as if they have been awakened from a sleep with a splash of cold water right on there face, probably it hurt their egos. How could a country which has been an outsourcing destination of low end work, could come up with an innovation like this!!! that too when building costs were on a all time high. 'they were zapped totally'

And like any thing in India it had it share of controversies thanks to Mamata Banerjee the truest example of the famed Indian bureaucracy, she was there to save the people, farmers and their fertile agriculture land, acting like saviour of the people sent by god, godsend my foot!!. I have just one thing to ask where the hell she was when the foundation of the plants was being laid, or when the government granted land to the Tata. Had she done away with her objections right at the start, Tata could have saved crores of rupees. Any ways like the man we know Ratan Tata did not take it too long to decide and just walked out of Singur. He was determined on the deadlines he had made and he made all the sacrifices to make it come true.

On the innovation front well it is Nano again, about37 patents have been filed, compared with GM's 280 patents a year looks miniature but then a start is always small. A non- conventional design with engine on the rear makes it a totally different machine. With a 623cc engine it promises a mileage of 20-25 and top speed of 105 kmh makes it 'The car' for the conjusted Indian roads and pockets.

In India it is just a sign of normalcy to criticize every good thing, Nano will increase congestion, more noise pollution blah blah ..... But on an ending note it is a great product (not sure how good it will be in terms of performance) but the feel of it, how the Indians feel a sense of pride with Nano being from India and also the confidence that we can innovate and create our own story leaving a mark on the global history. Suddenly you see everyone talking about innovation, global ambitions so on, suddenly the whole nation is charged up and filled with confidence. We can not only survive but also make it big, The Nano's Macro effect!!!!

As long as we have maids in our house US will continue to outsource to India

The first thought that comes to your mind what the hell has a maid got to do with outsourcing of work from US to India, well my friend there is. Before I put across my views in greater detail will just share a fact file, The software industry generates over 1.4 million direct employment across India, contributes roughly over 5 % to the GDP(gross domestic product) and not to forget makes India visible on the world map.

Now about the maid and her connection with outsourcing. how long our houses have had maids??? I am sure your grandmother had it, probably your grand - grand mother had it , so did your mom and I m sure you along with your spouse will have it too. Well the point to be noticed is the need of a maid will always persist like it always has cause at the end of the day she makes our lives easier. The fact that we actually outsourced a part of our household responsibilities would have probably never hit us. We quickly realized the importance of outsourcing monotonous and low end work, starting with bottom of the ladder getting our floors swept and dishes washed. As times passed we continued to out source more and more. Today a maid has a wide range of work right from a cleaner to a nanny for your young child. With more number of women entering the corporate world, the importance of the maid grew manifold. You will surprised to know often people base there decisions of taking a home in a metropolitan city based on the concentration and availability of good maids, the smarter lot of the maids command premium pricing as the demand for maids increased and the supply suddenly ran out. How does this connects to the Indian outsourcing story read on..........

Well the first time the developed countries outsourced it was because of there unwillingness of doing work that they considered low end or monotonous. Started with low end IT work(maintenance, contact center etc) to third world nations. The significant advantage for India at that time was the availability of a english speaking workforce (one of the few things we can thank the British for) and thankfully Indians were quick to take advantage. after the y2k they realized there was more to India and started out sourcing ' not so critical' work to India terming them as IDC (Indian development center). and the surge in outsourcing continued (the similarities how the maid became a cook and nanny and the increased outsourcing are striking.......

Today almost every leading innovators has a R&D center in India acknowledging the talent and potential of Indian youth. But in order to continue the growth story the emphasis should be a mix strategy which provides employment to the masses and also makes India an Innovation house. True the propping up of new outsourcing destination like China and Philippines have put across a few challenges but India has the first mover advantage and our veteran in this field, all we need is to create a differentiator between us and the others. A wave of innovation is the need of the hour.

In the end how I see it, The Indian outsourcing story is intact cause in the end recession or no recession we all need maids...[:)].

What stands out btw IIM graduates and others!!!!!

Well I have not done any kind of a survey related to B-schools, nor have I discovered any theories to prove it. believe it at your own risk!!!.

On the Sunday which just concluded I had the pleasure to visit one of the fest being organized at IIM B called Convergenz'09 by the PGSEM students. One of my college seniors invited me and was more than glad to accept. The fact that I could see IIM B close and real excited the child in me(remember how a child is excited to see a museum!! something similar). the star atttraction was the panel discussion scheduled for the later part of the day.

To make the best blocked the whole of a sunday to make the best out of it. The first contest Business plan was supposed to start at 10:30am and like a true Indians was there punctually at 11:00 am. As I entered the gates of IIM B I could hear an inner voice 'this is the place where the best brains of India are moulded and future leaders are born' . the 'business plan' event had just started teams from premier B-schools were participating, sat all ears to what ever they had to say. Well the expectations took a hit in a big way. Not that the plans were bad but I could no where feel that killer instinct that makes a workd class marketers, though some of the concepts looked possible opportunites related to envioronment, health, clean water etc none could convince the audiences or the judges. Some even lacked competitor knowledge and growth vison. Feeling bored sneaked out to catch up with my senior and his friends. Well we chatted literally on a whole of topics crickets, canteen food, there bosses and off course the recession and the fear of jobs loss :). It was only when we started to discuss our career path that I realized there clarity of thoughts, vision and a conviction to make a difference around them that makes them stand out of the crowd. How they are not satisfied with the conditions around them and will not liked to be played around.

Its not they are out of the world they are just one among us, but who have not give-in to the condition around them but have decided to make there own rules and pave there own path for many other to follow, a true virtue of a leader. One of the panel discussion later in the evening and something simlar to add. Innovation is a virtue for only 2% of the indian youth, the fact is the existence of roles models who can be idolized by the this young country and succed, quite similar how Narayan Murthy did in the 90s. No wonder you can see a whole lot ex-infy turn enterprenuers and adding to the job opportunity across the Indian sub-continent. Do you have it in YOU?????

Respected Fresh engineers (hahaha!!!!) could be

I am sure you would have read an SMS saying "through a stone in Bangalore it is sure to hit a dog or engineer". The world looks at envy as we produce 4 lakh+ engineers every year , only a engineer in India knows that he is treated nothing less than dirt when he is a fresher right out of college.Well thats what I used to think(have hands on exp being a engineer my self) all this while when a recent incident knocked on this belief.

A couple of days ago my ex-roomie who is in Coimbatore called up. long time wondered what could be the reason- well did not have to wait long, his aunt's son was coming for an interview, my assistance would be needed in his short trip to Bangalore ( bottom line he wanted for his cousin a free place to stay). Since a bachelors house has more than space to accommodate, I obliged. The guy was supposed to reach Friday early morning with an interview scheduled on Saturday.

Oping that the guy would reach before i left for office, putting on shoes at 8:00 was cursing him wondering where the hell he was???, should have been here by 7:30 is what was told. Was about to leave when a bell at the door marked the arrival of my friend's cousin. Short guy, shirt-pant and hair parted on the side was more than shy, had to ask him twice before he confirmed who he was and that his name was Roshan(god hate this !!). Well found him to be a quite well reserved, showed him the house around and the food whereabouts informing him that I will be back by 7. Once back from office, asked him about his interview details. The place was located not very far off and sensing his nervousness decided to drop him at the place ( have seen a few off campuses and treatment there can be more than harsh).

Next morning we left home on time, the guy was more than prepared resume, doc, stationary and some kind of a admit card ( haha no admit cards matter in an off campus all you need is the ability to sneak and reach ahead in the line before they close it), but kept quite not to scare the kid. We were before time, and to surprise hardly found any crowds at the venue. Being more than curious hoping that I have not got the poor guy to the wrong place, was relieved to know that we were at the right place. Once inside enquired about the interview scheduled. was told it was being handled by a consultancy called Elitmus evaluation. There were about 20 students, all carrying an admit card. A eLitmus representative with a attendance sheet, was calling out names and one by one all were let inside. At the stipulated time the test started no pushing, rushing of any sorts that I had faced at a number of off campus events, impressed by the smooth way they had planned it and most importantly the way they treated freshers. As I waited for Roshan could not help enquiring about Elitmus, a short conversation revealed that it was a company focused exclusively on fresher hiring, conducts a test known as pH test held across India every 3 weeks, once you have the scores you can start applying to the companies listed. Candidates are short listed on the basis of there academic and pH scores(a first level of filtering of sorts). I think the best part was a creation of a online platform where companies and students could meet. A great benefit for both increasing there reach significantly. Plus you will be treated more like humans and less like dirt. Talent is respected and appreciated.

At the end was more than pleased to know something like Elitmus especially in these recessive times, Roshan was hired and was one happy chap. Times are changing and as the World Wide Web converged the world on a desktop similarly access for students to companies and vice versa across India has been made possible them. And ya its also saves a lot of frustration and money for all those talented engineers rooming India for jobs/offcampus. Finally the young talented engineers are getting what they probably deserve!!!.

Slumdog Millionaire and things around it!!!!

Hurray!!!!!! Slumdog Millionaire bagged 8 Oscars creating history. It won 8 out of the total nomination of 10. Oscars came for Best Adapted Screenplay, Cinematography, Sound Mixing, Film Editing, Original Score, Original Song, Direction and Motion Picture. The total tally of awards has crossed 100 including the BAFTA and Golden Globe.

"The arrival of India at Hollywood" thats whats the media hails it as.The movie based on the novel by Vikas Swarup Q&A suddenly got the Indian film fraternity in the limelight with a quite a bit of appreciation, thing long overdue. The crown being with AR Rahman and Resul Pookutty, though they are not first to get the Oscars Satyajit Ray and Bhanu Athaiya being the other Indians to get it. My hearty congratulations to "Mozart of Madras" A R Rahman (original score and original song) and Resul Pookutty (sound mixing) for there great work.(that's 3 out of the total 8).

The movie traces the life of Jamal& family, in the backdrop of Dharavi (Asia biggest slum), the best scene "Amitabh Bachan autograph to a stinking Jamal" truly tells you the god stature of the Big B in India and continues unabated. Cinema celebrities often have a 'almost' god stature in India, you will be surprised to find temples in south India dedicated to them, Rajnikanth and Rajkumar almost have god status in there respective states. On second thoughts Bollywood members may have miles to go to match earning levels of there Hollywood counterparts, there celebrity status can never be matched by them ever. (having a population of 1.2bn has its advantages)

Back to slumdog... well the actors Dev Patel(British-Indian) Freido Pinto, Anil Kapoor, Irfan Khan, Mahesh Manjrekar gave it a complete Indian look, and with the movie making it big, has provided a great platform to showcase the talent of Indian actors, musician and technicians to its truest capabilities. It is not the first time, Indians being associated with international projects- Irfan Khan in the Might Heart, AR Rahaman music in Lord of The Rings but there talent somehow was never noticed and appreciated. We can only hope that with the appreciation coming, Bollywood will be better off to showcase its talent to the global audience and probably cash on it as well.

No doubt the movie is great but have seen a lot of people commenting its good but not worth a Oscar!!!.. I m sure Danny Boyle will not be too pleased to hear that.(and after the Oscars will not give a damn) Probably we have missed the underlying message of hope and optimism, how well the British director and his team have been able to depict India and bring it out to the global audience.

And guess what you already have people talking about the misrepresentation of information in the movie ( the same old dirty trick to get free PR). Salman Rushdie claims "piles impossibility on impossibility.". (sitting in London and talking about life in India way to go Mr. Rushdie).

Personally I feel a great movie, with a theme of hope and optimism.A journey from a slump to a millionaire probably mirrors the Indian story from a poor country to the 20th century superpower. The new Indian era has just begin and is here to stay!!!!!

Whats not right ??

An incident that made me think!!!
A couple of days I took a trip back to my place by an auto, traveling by a 2 wheelers regularly gives me a fair idea of my place being around 4 kilometers change.

Have this habit of asking the auto driver is your meter correct :) ( who will say yes it is tempered) I agree it is a bit weired but you will be surprised how many of them will actually say yes, at least 6 of 10. Since it was a short distance our realization that the meter was tempered came in close to the end of trip. It had shot over by 35% . trip of 4 km cost 40 bucks, a car trip would have been better. Got down handed the correct amount , told his meter is tempered, the guy in return starts swearing aloud and the people around me think a cheapo!!! fighting with a auto drives for a sum of 5 bucks. On the challenge of taking him to the police station has no effect (you will be surprised that most of the autos are owned by policemen). On the challenge that we will retrace the trip on my vehicle to get the right distance, will pay him double if i turn out to be wrong otherwise will pay him resulted in a new session of loud swearing. eventually took off with the money I had given and continued swearing behind my back, cant say how long as his voice faded as I walked.

Who is to be blamed, we youngster of the IT industry who have more cash thus don't bother about money and paying off what ever these auto/other people demand. The government or the administration which has not established practises which check tempering or the auto drivers who want to fool the young Indians(talent - thats how we are often addressed rt!!) of this country .

There are hardly any cities where auto meter is followed, are we giving in to their demands cause we want things easy and have a CHALTA HAI attitude has only made lazy Indians taking up incorrect ways to make money. Only standing up for what is correct might bring in some much needed changes in the ways this country is run starting at the grassroots. In the end you might feel a blog for the cause of 5 bucks, well its about giving and getting what one deserves and stopping whats not right.
