Hurray!!!!!! Slumdog Millionaire bagged 8 Oscars creating history. It won 8 out of the total nomination of 10. Oscars came for Best Adapted Screenplay, Cinematography, Sound Mixing, Film Editing, Original Score, Original Song, Direction and Motion Picture. The total tally of awards has crossed 100 including the BAFTA and Golden Globe.
"The arrival of India at Hollywood" thats whats the media hails it as.The movie based on the novel by Vikas Swarup Q&A suddenly got the Indian film fraternity in the limelight with a quite a bit of appreciation, thing long overdue. The crown being with AR Rahman and Resul Pookutty, though they are not first to get the Oscars Satyajit Ray and Bhanu Athaiya being the other Indians to get it. My hearty congratulations to "Mozart of Madras" A R Rahman (original score and original song) and Resul Pookutty (sound mixing) for there great work.(that's 3 out of the total 8).
The movie traces the life of Jamal& family, in the backdrop of Dharavi (Asia biggest slum), the best scene "Amitabh Bachan autograph to a stinking Jamal" truly tells you the god stature of the Big B in India and continues unabated. Cinema celebrities often have a 'almost' god stature in India, you will be surprised to find temples in south India dedicated to them, Rajnikanth and Rajkumar almost have god status in there respective states. On second thoughts Bollywood members may have miles to go to match earning levels of there Hollywood counterparts, there celebrity status can never be matched by them ever. (having a population of 1.2bn has its advantages)
Back to slumdog... well the actors Dev Patel(British-Indian) Freido Pinto, Anil Kapoor, Irfan Khan, Mahesh Manjrekar gave it a complete Indian look, and with the movie making it big, has provided a great platform to showcase the talent of Indian actors, musician and technicians to its truest capabilities. It is not the first time, Indians being associated with international projects- Irfan Khan in the Might Heart, AR Rahaman music in Lord of The Rings but there talent somehow was never noticed and appreciated. We can only hope that with the appreciation coming, Bollywood will be better off to showcase its talent to the global audience and probably cash on it as well.
No doubt the movie is great but have seen a lot of people commenting its good but not worth a Oscar!!!.. I m sure Danny Boyle will not be too pleased to hear that.(and after the Oscars will not give a damn) Probably we have missed the underlying message of hope and optimism, how well the British director and his team have been able to depict India and bring it out to the global audience.
And guess what you already have people talking about the misrepresentation of information in the movie ( the same old dirty trick to get free PR). Salman Rushdie claims "piles impossibility on impossibility.". (sitting in London and talking about life in India way to go Mr. Rushdie).
Personally I feel a great movie, with a theme of hope and optimism.A journey from a slump to a millionaire probably mirrors the Indian story from a poor country to the 20th century superpower. The new Indian era has just begin and is here to stay!!!!!

Whats not right ??
An incident that made me think!!!
A couple of days I took a trip back to my place by an auto, traveling by a 2 wheelers regularly gives me a fair idea of my place being around 4 kilometers change.
Have this habit of asking the auto driver is your meter correct :) ( who will say yes it is tempered) I agree it is a bit weired but you will be surprised how many of them will actually say yes, at least 6 of 10. Since it was a short distance our realization that the meter was tempered came in close to the end of trip. It had shot over by 35% . trip of 4 km cost 40 bucks, a car trip would have been better. Got down handed the correct amount , told his meter is tempered, the guy in return starts swearing aloud and the people around me think a cheapo!!! fighting with a auto drives for a sum of 5 bucks. On the challenge of taking him to the police station has no effect (you will be surprised that most of the autos are owned by policemen).On the challenge that we will retrace the trip on my vehicle to get the right distance, will pay him double if i turn out to be wrong otherwise will pay him resulted in a new session of loud swearing. eventually took off with the money I had given and continued swearing behind my back, cant say how long as his voice faded as I walked.
Who is to be blamed, we youngster of the IT industry who have more cash thus don't bother about money and paying off what ever these auto/other people demand.The government or the administration which has not established practises which check tempering or the auto drivers who want to fool the young Indians(talent - thats how we are often addressed rt!!) of this country .
There are hardly any cities where auto meter is followed, are we giving in to their demands cause we want things easy and have a CHALTA HAI attitude has only made lazy Indians taking up incorrect ways to make money. Only standing up for what is correct might bring in some much needed changes in the ways this country is run starting at the grassroots. In the end you might feel a blog for the cause of 5 bucks, well its about giving and getting what one deserves and stopping whats not right.
